" Many of our wines are unfined and unfiltered. As part of our constant exploration of both old and new methods to make unique and distinctive wines, we ferment and/or age some of our wines in clay amphorae and concrete egg, and sometimes utilize varying degrees of skin contact in the production of white wines."
Emmitt-Scorsone Winegrowers is a partnership between winemakers Palmer Emmitt and Michael Scorsone. At our small artisan winery in northern Sonoma County, we bottle wines under several labels – Judge Palmer, Domenica Amato, and Emmitt-Scorsone. Across the portfolio, our grapes are sourced from small, family-owned vineyards and our wines hand-made with passion and authenticity.
The Line-Up
2019 Domenica Amato "Che Fico" Fiano, Clarksburg, California $29.99
Winemaking: The grapes were initially foot crushed and left to soak on skins and stems for a few hours before bring whole cluster pressed. Racked into clay amphora (60%) and neutral French oak (40%), the wine began fermentation spontaneously with wild yeast a few days later. In these same vessels, the wine finished both primary and malolactic fermentation, and then aged on the lees for 5 months before being blended together, filtered, and bottled.
2019 Emmitt Scorsone Grenache Blanc, Carneros, Sonoma County, California $24.99
Tasting Notes: "With a reductive, flinty initial aroma, this wine opens up on the palate to reveal peach, melon and lemon rind flavors. Crisp acidity and a light touch keep it fresh and rewarding." - Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast, 90 points
Winemaking: Harvested by hand and whole-cluster pressed, the must was racked into a concrete egg tank, where fermentation began spontaneously with wild yeast. Fermentation continued at a snail's pace throughout the winter before finally going dry just weeks before bottling. The wine spent a total of six months aging in the concrete egg before it was blended with 5% Viognier and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
2015 Judge Palmer "Sur Les Peaux" Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County, California $38.99
Winemaking: "Sur les Peaux" is a departure from typical California Sauvignon Blanc in several ways, beginning with the fermentation in contact with the skins and ending with extended barrel aging. The goal of this orange wine style is to coax uncommon texture, complexity and age-ability from white grapes. In this vintage, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc were co-fermented in a concrete egg along with 40% of the skins (all of the Semillon skins and a portion of the Sauvignon Blanc skins) for two weeks before being pressed and racked. It aged for one year in one-third new French oak, one-third neutral French oak, and one-third stainless steel.
2019 Emmitt Scorsone Old Vine Grenache, Dry Creek Valley, California $28.99
Tasting Notes: Dripping with sun-drenched black-plum and cherry flavors, this is an elegant expression of pure Grenache, marked by refined layers of black tea, crushed clay and spice. Its freshness, soft tannins and juicy constitution make it ready to drink now, but it should gain depth well through 2025.
Winemaking: The grapes were de-stemmed into small open-top tanks for a long cold soak to encourage development of color before fermentation began spontaneously with wild yeast. Aided only by the heat of the sun and gravity-fed rack and returns once per day, the must was unadulterated with chemical additives, other than a small sulfur addition at the completion of malolactic fermentation. The wine aged 9 months in neutral French oak barrels and was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
2018 Emmitt Scorsone Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley, California $33.99
Vineyard: The 30 year-old vines adjacent to our winery in the rugged hills above West Dry Creek are planted in a secluded glen with well-draining, gravelly Laughlin loam soil. At 300 feet elevation, the vineyard enjoys cooler temperatures than the valley floor and is above the fog line on most days, creating the perfect storm for richly flavored, densely structured, classic California Cabernet.
2017 Judge Palmer "Vintage Select" Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, California $45.99
A bright, expansive nose announces this wine packed with warm currant, red licorice and berry compote flavors around a core of loamy earth and subtle spice character. Complex and structured to last, the palate features silky smooth tannins weaved with firm acidity.
Planted along a rolling swale a few hundred feet up from the valley floor, the combination of sun exposure, well-draining soil, and slightly cooler temperatures create the perfect storm for richly flavored, densely structured, classic California Cabernet. The blend also includes 4% Malbec from Blau Vineyard in Knights Valley and 3% Petit Verdot from Ellis Alden Vineyard.
