2023 Denis & Didier Bertholier Chignin Vieilles Vignes, Savoie, France $28.99
The Bertholliers come from a long wine-making tradition; growers, owners and winemakers for several generations dating back to 1850. Today, brothers Denis and Didier own several parcels on the southernmost and steepest parts of the Savoie hills whose abrupt slopes, too difficult to work on, had been abandoned by their forefathers at the beginning of the 20th century. But this is the terrain where the grapes thrive. Made from 50 year-old vines of Jacquère. Nose of white flowers and citrus fruit, white peach and lemon. Beautifully fresh, mouth-watering citrus and mineral palate with a certain salinity.
2024 Domaine Cherrier Sancerre, Loire Valley, France $27.99
We’ve worked with brothers Jean-Marie and François Cherrier for over 20 years, and their Sancerre remains one of the best values in the category. The new vintage is electric—bursting with Meyer lemon, green apple, and passion fruit, all backed by a crisp mineral core that’s pure Sancerre. Finding estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc from this region at this price—and at this quality—is almost unheard of. Drink it now for its vibrant freshness and over the next several years. One glass and you’ll understand why this partnership has thrived for two decades—and why it’s not slowing down anytime soon.
Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930. Since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The domaine has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky minerality and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. K&L French Regional buyer Keith Mabry says: "The Cherrier to me is always one of the biggest crowd-pleasing Sancerres/Sauvignon Blancs from anywhere in the world."
2023 Francois Carillon Bourgogne Aligote, Burgundy, France $32.99
We’re obsessed with Aligoté, a historical grape that was once the noble white of Burgundy. Finicky and hard-to-grow, the late ripening variety was ripped-out in favor of the easier-to-grow, prolific Chardonnay. Like Chardonnay, Aligoté is an exceptional translator of terroir, packing a mouthful of frosty minerality, yet there’s something mysterious about it, dropping its clues of sweet licorice, fennel, and corn husk on the palate. Made from the premier Aligoté clone, Jaune Doré, Carillon’s vines grow in both Puligny-Montrachet and in the village of Corpeau, just south. With an impressive vine age of more than fifty years, he treats his Aligoté just like his Premier Cru Chardonnays, with minimal stirring of the lees and aging in a small percentage of new French Allier oak. A fan favorite, we receive a small allocation of this wine every year. A very complex wine for the price, enjoy this weekly, while you hold onto those Puligny-Montrachets. ~Allegra A
2023 Chateau De Varennes Beaujolais Villages, Beaujolais, France $16.99
The nose is both fine and intense with floral (violet, peony) and fruity (raspberry, blackcurrant) notes. The palate is refreshing, fleshy and full-bodied with ripe, fruity notes. The finish is long and refreshing with lasting fruit flavors.
Located at the southernmost tip of wine-producing Burgundy, the famed Chateau de Varennes is in the commune of Quincie en Beaujolais, north of Lyon. This 11th-century castle followed the fortune of its owners: it was modest and humble under the Villion family in the 13th century, rich and magnificent in the time of the Lords of Beaujeu (14th century). Then various owners ensued. Since 1809, members of the Charveriat family have owned the castle and cultivated the estate’s vines. Like throughout the entire Beaujolais region, the Gamay grape is king, capable of subtle expressions when planted in granite and silica-based terroirs. The vineyards cover the hillsides surrounding the castle and face due south, which provides optimal conditions for the ripening of the grapes so that they express all of the characteristic red berry fruitiness of Gamay
2022 Domaine Doreau Monthelie Rouge, Burgundy, France $39.99
This boutique winery is nestled in the charming village of Monthélie in the renowned Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. It all started with Pierre Doreau, a true pioneer who arrived in the Nolay region to help replant vines devastated by phylloxera. Here’s when he acquired a few precious plots of land for himself, and so Domaine Doreau was born. Since the 19th century, Domaine Doreau’s wine-growing mastery has passed from generation to generation, each of them, passionately carrying forward the legacy, cultivating exceptional wines 100% Pinot Noir. This wine offers a stunning balance of acidity and silky tannins. You’ll experience flavors of red berries, complemented by earthy undertones of forest floor and damp soil. This amazing wine has a vibrant and fresh character, with a persistent finish.
2021 Chateau de Parenchere Bordeaux Superirore, Bordeaux, France $16.99
The Château de Parenchère, whose foundations were laid in 1570 by Pierre de Parenchières (governor of Sainte-Foy-la Grande), is situated at the easternmost edge of the Bordeaux appellation, next to Bergerac. Renovated by Raphaël Gazaniol in 1958, the estate consists of 378 unbroken acres (153 hectares), 156 (or 63 hectares) of which are under vine. In January of 2005, Mr. Per Landin took over as majority shareholder in the estate. Today, Raphaël’s son Jean and granddaughter Julia strive to meet the challenge of producing fine Bordeaux wines, demonstrating that great wines can come from lesser-known terroirs.
