The Wines

2021 Love & Squalor Dry Riesling, Willamette Valley, Oregon $22.99
“If you like your Riesling bone dry with the sort of lip-smacking juiciness that is as close to sucking on a lemon as a wine can be, here’s your bottle. And I mean that in a good way. Beyond the lemon you’ll find grapefruit, tangerine, a squeeze of lime… you get the picture. Dry Rieslings can be so dry the fruit feels desiccated; not here. This wine is bursting wide open with fruit, which carries the flavors bright and bold through a lingering finish with a hint of butter.”

2016 Love & Squalor Riesling, Willamette Valley, Oregon $41.99
This dry Riesling is 43% Sunnyside Vineyard, Salem and 57% Roncali Vineyard, West Eugene. The key to all of Matt’s wines is balance, but it is even more apparent in this gorgeous Riesling. The play of sugar, acid and alcohol results in a sum that is greater than its parts. You’ll taste apricots and peaches alongside green apple, citrus, and perhaps even a few tropical fruit notes.

2021 Love & Squalor Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon $32.99
The Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a multi-vineyard and multi-appellation blend. The intent of this wine is to capture the essence of the vintage. Like canning preserves in my kitchen, I see winemaking as a preserving of the harvest. I look for a sweet fruit aroma to pull you into the glass followed by all of the nuances that make us love Pinot Noir. A bright acid profile is key to keeping the palate vibrant, pairing the wine with food and letting the flavors linger long after the swallow. Balance creates a dynamic wine that is exciting to drink and pairs well with various foods.

2021 Love & Squalor Reserved Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon $51.99
The 2021 Pinot Noir Reserved (AKA Fancy Pants). OK, the fancy madras patchwork pants are still hanging on the label, but we outgrew the cheeky name. This limited 102-case bottling is a blended barrel selection from Ribbon Ridge Vineyard (in Ribbon Ridge AVA) Arlyn Vineyard in the Chehelam AVA and Gemini Vineyard in the Laurelwood District. These are all top-notch organic sites that never disappoint. During the blending process, there are always a handful of barrels that are quiet but show great promise. We separate those samples and blind taste through the blending process to make this wine. The 2021 is more delicate than our regular Pinot Noir Willamette Valley bottling but has a core of great personality and longevity. It is earthy with big fruits and aromatic market spices.

2017 Love & Squalor Temperance Hill Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity, Willamette Valley, Oregon $60.99
This single vineyard Pinot noir is from Temperance Hill, one of the treasured gems of the Willamette Valley, was aged in neutral French barriques for 18 months before bottling in July. Here's a review you may like from Northwest Wine Report: "Portland Wine Company winemaker Matt Berson, headquartered just southwest of Mount Tabor Park, has nurtured these two nicely used barrels of Pinot Noir from famed grower Dai Crisp. It represents an Oct. 8 harvest and a blend from two blocks where the resident clones are Pommard and Dijon 113, 114 and 667. Despite the neutral French oak, there’s a prominent nose of black cherry, cocoa powder, toast and cedar. Inside, the four years of bottle conditioning make for a delicious mouth feel and weight as Bing cherry skins and red currant juice are joined by more barrel notes in the lengthy finish."
