The Wines
2024 Kir Yianna Akakies Sparkling Rose, Greece $27.99
100% Xinomavro sourced from Amyndeon, across the mountains from Kir-Yianni’s home base of Naoussa and a historical source for high-acid grapes for rosé. This is fermented to an irresistible 17 grams or so per liter of residual sugar before a Charmat-method secondary fermentation that comes out to a creamy 3.5 atmospheres of pressure.
Bright rich pink color with persistent bubbles. The nose is intensely fruit-forward with aromas of wild strawberry, white-fleshed cherry, and tomato. The mouth is rich and fruity with vibrant acidity and a delicate touch of sweetness. Delicious, refreshing finish.
2024 Mylonas Assyrtiko, Attika, Greece $20.99
The history of Mylonas Winery goes back a century and has been passed down from father-to-son for three generations. Now run by the Mylonas brothers - Antonis, Tasos and Stamatis - they work with local grapes and experiment with new varieties in this emerging region.
With more than a touch of tropical fruits, there's this singing peach note that comes to the forefront, surrounded by hints of dried pineapple and fresh mango. The palate is lean and lemon-forward but then that note falls away as fresh pineapple and gooseberry show up to the party. There's a good depth to the fruit and the finish is lingering with a little touch of white pepper.
2023 Mortellito Cala Niuro Rosso Terre Sicilane, Sicily, Italy $27.99
From: Pachino, Sicily, Italy
Varietal: Frappato, Nero d’Avola
Taste: An aromatic nose unfolds layers of strawberry, pomegranate, cherry, and floral hints, along with a touch of salinity with subtle aromas of wet, baked soil and a light touch of tobacco earth notes. On the palate, it is fresh and vibrant, balancing the bright red fruit and floral tones of Frappato with the deeper fruit flavors and spice of Nero d'Avola. Fine tannins contribute to a slight saline finish, while the wine’s light body and refreshing character make it particularly enjoyable when served slightly chilled.
Pairing: For a balanced pairing, consider dishes that highlight acidity and umami, complementing the wine’s fresh red fruit character and subtle spice. The bright acidity and floral tones make it a natural fit for Sicilian-inspired seafood dishes, such as grilled swordfish with lemon and capers or spaghetti alle vongole. Its light body and fine tannins also pair well with vegetable-based dishes like caponata, roasted red peppers, or a simple tomato and basil bruschetta.
About: Mortellito is quietly redefining the essence of the island’s wines in the southeastern part of Sicily, near Pachino. Founded by Dario Serrentino, the winery stems from deep generational ties to the area. For years, Dario’s family cultivated almonds and vineyards locally, selling grapes to nearby cooperatives. It wasn’t until he took over that he shifted toward estate bottling, aiming to craft wines that reflect the raw beauty of the Val di Noto’s sun-drenched landscapes.
2023 Mortellito Cala Iancu BIanco Terre Siciliane, Sicily, Italy $27.99
Dario Serrentino organically farms 15 hectares of vineyards, plus olive and almond trees, in the Val di Noto, in southeast Sicily. He began vinifying and bottling wine as Mortellito in 2014. In a few short years, he's become one of Sicily's most important natural producers. Limestone soils, earlier picking, and a light touch in the cellar yield wines that are fresh, vibrant, and delicious; they're glou-glou with complexity and even a touch of sophistication. Cala Ìancu (“white grapes” in Sicilian) is 90% grillo and 10% catarratto from a 4-hectare vineyard, with one night of skin contact, a couple of weeks of natural fermentation, and several months of aging, all in stainless steel tanks. The wine is fresh, salty, and savory. Drink it with raw or cooked fish (including sushi) or pasta alla Norma.
2023 Domaine Skouras Saint George, Nemea, Greece $22.99
100% Agiorgitiko, 20+ year-old vines planted in clay soil
Vineyards are 650 meters above sea level
Aged 12 months in French barrique
"Sweet spices, hazelnuts, chocolate and cherries on the nose, followed by a creamy, full-bodied and juicy palate, framed by ripe tannins. Chocolaty finish." - James Suckling
Domaine Skouras Agiorgitiko St. George Nemea is a distinguished red wine that showcases the excellence and uniqueness of the Agiorgitiko grape, one of Greece's most esteemed indigenous varietals. Crafted by Domaine Skouras, a winery at the forefront of the Greek wine renaissance, this wine hails from the Nemea region in the Peloponnese, an area with a winemaking history that spans millennia and is renowned for its deep, rich soils and favorable microclimate. Under the guidance of George Skouras, the winery combines traditional techniques with modern viticulture to produce wines that are both authentic and of exceptional quality. The "St. George" in the wine's name is an English translation of "Agiorgitiko," paying homage to the varietal's heritage and significance in Greek viticulture.
2024 Makarounas En Arhi Cabernet Franc, Cyprus, Greece $25.99
100% Cabernet Franc from un-grafted vines
From 35-year-old bush vines
Fermentation in tank after 14-day maceration
The winery was founded in 2016 by UC Davis graduate Theodore’s Makarounas, putting his knowledge of oenology and viticulture, along with his families farming legacy to use, by creating great wine in the vineyard. Aromas of fruit leather, red cherries, blackberries, and a slightly reductive damp cellar aroma. The use of stainless steel allows the crystal gypsum, clay, and limestone soils shine while staying true to the grape and the Island’s East Asian location.
