Martha Stoumen Wines was founded upon the desire to recapture a farming and winemaking culture that has all but faded away: a winemaking culture of patience.
The Wines
2022 Martha Stoumen Post Flirtation White, California $30.99
Varietal: 30% Vermentino, 27% Roussanne, 25% Marsanne, 18% Muscat blanc
Alcohol: 11%
Vinification Notes: Muscat blanc harvested one week prior to Roussanne and Marsanne. Each lot tumbled in the press to get just a hint of skin contact before pressing, then co-fermented in stainless steel. Vermentino pressed immediately and fermented separately in stainless steel before blending with Roussanne, Marsanne, and Muscat blanc. Aged together on fine lees for 6 months before bottling. Unfined. Unfiltered. Sediment expected.
This is always a fun wine to make, as it marks the beginning of harvest in mid-to-late August. Cecchini & Cecchini Vineyard is located outside of Oakley, Contra Costa County (affectionately CoCo). The weather and soils of CoCo are reminiscent of the Mediterranean, with a hot land mass, super duper sandy soils, and a near constant cooling wind coming off of the very cold, salty waters of the Carquinez Strait. The resulting wines are full of summer flavors, slightly salty, and extremely drinkable. Vermentino from a certified biodynamic vineyard in San Joaquin County provides just the right amount of a citrusy lift to this refreshingly complex blend.
2022 Martha Stoumen Honeymoon, Mendocino California $38.99
Grape: Colombard/Chardonnay
Colombard comes from Ricetti Vineyard, Redwood Valley, Mendocino County; planted in 1948; head-trained, dry-farmed (non-irrigated), certified organic vineyard; gravelly loam soils. Chardonnay comes from Hawkeye Ranch, Redwood Valley, Mendocino County; dry-farmed (non-irrigated), practicing organic vineyard; gravelly loam soils.
Colombard and Chardonnay were harvested separately. Both pressed immediately, settled overnight, and then racked off gross juice lees to ferment in neutral oak barrique. Aged in barrel, unracked on fine lees, for 6-months before blending. Once blended, the wine aged for an additional 3 months in neutral oak prior to being bottled, unfined and unfiltered.
Aromas of candied melon, alpine herbs and almond skin. Balanced, with bright acidity and rounded texture.
2022 Martha Stoumen Post Flirtation Red, Contra Costa County/Mendocino County, California $30.99
Varietal: 62% Zinfandel, 34% Carignan, 3% Pinot noir, 1% Petite Sirah
Alcohol: 12.5%
Vinification Notes: Zinfandel (95% destemmed, 5% whole-cluster), Carignan, Pinot noir, and Petite Sirah (100% whole-cluster); each fermented separately and aged in both stainless steel and neutral oak barrique for 6 months. Unfined. Lightly filtered before blending and bottling. Sediment expected
This wine is so joyous, and to me, distinctly Californian. I never knew how much I loved Zinfandel until I started working as Chris Brockway’s (Broc Cellars) Assistant Winemaker. When picked before the grape berries begin to shrivel, you get amazing hibiscus, rhubarb, pomegranate, and baking spices from Zin. Like an avocado, the window is small between unripe and overripe for Zin, and I watch our Zinfandel vineyards closely. Carignan, Zin’s less celebrated companion, provides a savory component reminiscent of driving through California chaparral, and, like Ricetti’s, can be incredibly complex with 70 years of vine age. I’m not re-inventing the wheel with this classic old vine Zin/Carignan blend, just lightening things up a bit.
2022 Martha Stoumen Pinot Noir Hawkeye Ranch Vineyard, Mendocino, California $48.99
Vinification Notes: Whole clusters (stems intact) of Pinot noir sealed in a tank (semi-carbonic maceration). After opening the tank, a mixture of punchdowns and pumpovers were used to gently extract tannin and then pressed prior to dryness. The wine aged on fine lees in neutral oak barrique for 9 months before blending and bottling. Unfined. Unfiltered. Sediment expected.
Pete Johnson’s vineyard pocket in Redwood Valley continues to amaze me. In contrast to our warm and windy vineyards closer to Ukiah, Pete’s Hawkeye Ranch (and nearby Dicesare Vineyard) showcase this area’s dramatic daily temperature inversion, where cool overnight air pools from the mountain slopes into the rolling valley vineyards and provides daily relief, often in excessive of +/- 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Dry farming reduces yield and results in wines that have just the right amount of concentration, even at relatively lower extraction. Our 1960s-era Pinot noir from Hawkeye Ranch is a wine that brings ample California sunshine with restraint.
2022 Martha Stoumen Venturi Carignan, Mendocino, California
Attune to your instincts and feast with your nose. This wine emerged from an extended 25 day maceration to greet you with transcendent aromas of California chaparral and dark purple plum. Bask in the gentle charisma of Venturi Vineyard’s distinct dusty tannin
Enjoy With
Hearty, simple dishes served in ceramic, wood and earthenware pair best with this ultra-dimensional wine. Pick up your local heritage bean and put it on to simmer. Awaken your kitchen with birria, lamb or oxtail stew. Whatever you’re cooking, take your time and garnish with pomegranate.
