The Wines

2022 Domaine Vincent Wengier Chablis, Burgundy, France $27.99
Bright gold color. Floral notes of blossom and hawthorn, are joined by white fruits and delicate minerality. Well-rounded, fresh, and enveloping palate with good concentration.

Vincent Wengier is a fourth-generation Chablis winemaker who, along with his wife, Sophie, has produced wine under his name since 2018. Domaine Vincent Wengier was first established in 1950 and is located in the southwest region of the appellation, in the village of Prehy, two hours southeast of Paris.

The Wengiers manage 27 hectares of vines, spread over four appellations. They hold HVE (high environmental value) certification to promote fauna and flora within the vineyard. Their careful attention to detail in the vineyards has also earned them organic certification, effective in 2023.

2023 Domaine Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet, Burgundy, France $127.99
A source of some of the finest, juicy, silky and elegantly floral Chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet lies just to the north of Chassagne-Montrachet.
"A wonderfully translucent, transparent Puligny Villages that majors in all that you’d wish for from this appellation; elegant, silky, flowing fruit, the finest of textures and great purity. A knockout, extremely high-quality villages. A blend of seven parcels vinified separately then aged in 10% new oak, more than a third comes from Les Meix, one of the top Puligny lieux-dits."

2023 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Embrazees, Burgundy, France $111.99
Nose
Thomas Morey’s Chassagne-Montrachet Les Embrazées 2023 is certainly comparable to the wine from the neighboring Les Baudines district. It displays a perfectly balanced blend of ripe and cool aromas. They are reminiscent of star fruit, lemons, greengages, and pineapple, buds and white blossoms. Here, however, the green fruit stands out somewhat more clearly. The same applies to the reduction, which currently seems most evident, even if it still resides in the fine, elegant range.

Palate
On the palate, this is again a ripe, juicy wine with light, yellow fruit. It appears sensual and slightly creamy with a subtle sweetness of extract. But this is also a zesty and crisply mineral Chardonnay, whose tension and expansiveness are still difficult to fathom. It is the 1er Cru that certainly needs the most time to fully develop, but almost certainly also has the most potential. The crowning glory of an excellent 2023 white portfolio.

2022 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Burgundy, France $47.99
The most acclaimed region of Burgundy, the Côte d’Or is defined by a long, limestone escarpment beneath the ground's surface and is home to all of Burgundy’s most famous wines. While Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are produced throughout the Côte d’Or, the north tends to excel at Pinot Noir and the south, at Chardonnay.

The northern half of the Côte d’Or is called the Côte de Nuits. Here reside most of the Pinot noir Grands Crus vineyards of Burgundy—the only one farther south, in Côte de Beaune, is Aloxe-Corton.

This wine opens out early and offers a wide range of red berry aromas, sometimes developing animal hints when mature. The structure is supple; owing to the moderate tannin content. Bourgogne Pinot Noir can be drunk young, when it will already reveal elegance and typicity.

2022 Domaine Vincent Girardin Gevrey Chambertain Viellies Vignes, Burgundy, France $107.99
Variety: Pinot Noir – vines over 60 years old, biodynamically grown grapes and harvested manually Color: very reddish, with notes of blackberries and other small black and red berries Taste: balanced and well structured, with very good acidity, beautiful tannins

2022 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits Saint Georges 1er Clos Des Porre, Burgundy, France  $135.99
Lush, juicy and seductive, this red features blackberry, black currant, blueberry, iron and earth aromas and flavors. Quickly tightens up courtesy of the solid structure, with fine promise for its evolution. Offers terrific balance and length. Best from 2029 through 2047.
